There's always speculation that La Perle won't be cool anymore. They say too many know about it to still count as in the know. But the lack of premium liquor and seating weeds people out. So does the bathroom.
Every year, a new batch of messy haired ingenues descend and claim the bar as their own. They like that the small bar area pushes everyone onto the two sidewalks that flank the cafe as it makes it easier to claim you're just stopping by before somewhere else. The owner has good style and is friends with a lot of artists.
But it was the Galliano incident that gave it a different reputation. La Perle was the backdrop for three antisemitic rants that got him immediately fired from Dior and blacklisted from LVMH. It was the fashion world's first cancellation. Galliano later claimed barbiturate poisoning and too much red wine there. It got worldwide fame after that. They sell merch that says La Perle Forever.
