High Art is usually the first stop for younger collectors and critics, since they were early on artists like Max Hooper Schneider and Valerie Keane. Their booth at Basel and Frieze is always packed and easy to spot by the team’s weed leaf sweatshirts.
The gallery was founded by Jason Hwang, Romain Chenais, and Philippe Joppin. The first two ran Shanaynay, a Belleville project space that shifted Paris’s attention away from blue-chip painting toward more experimental work. Joppin came from Perrotin.. It’s still run with the artists in mind, not the market. The space has two rooms: a white cube and a baroque salon as it's in the same building as Carmen. Most artists like the challenge of curating and reassembling which pieces go in which room.
