New Classic

Lucie Franc de Ferriere is seen as New York's baking it-girl. She is a baker other bakers bake from. She isn't chaotic enough, in the piping or the colors, to be part of the messy cake movement per se, but from a distance she gets filed there. The comments under one TikTok of her cakes wanted to know why there were boiled eggs on top, which were actually dollops of Swiss meringue with lemon curd in the middle.

Her unfussy piping and lo-fi Instagram aesthetic have put her alongside bakers like Aimee France (@aimeefrance, formerly @yungkombucha420 and now better known for her three-drink breakfasts), Paris Starn (@paris.starn), and Amy Yip (@yip.studio_), whose cakes have been in Acne Studios' magazine, Acne Paper. Lucie's cakes have been ordered by Anna Wintour, Lorde, and Tanner Fletcher.

A lot of what she bakes, and how the bakery looks, traces back to how she grew up. The storefront's yellow is a nod to Menton, the town of lemons on the French Riviera where her grandmother lives. The flowers on the cakes are meant to look overgrown and are reminiscent of her mother's garden. The chocolate stout cake in her cookbook is her mother's Guinness cake, the tearoom bestseller at the family's château.
